How to Pick a Ripe Pomegranate

Simple checks on shape, skin, weight and colour to help shoppers pick a ripe pomegranate.

Fruits

The pomegranate is as attractive to look at as it is tasty to eat. Because the fruit contains plenty of iron, it works like medicine for people who suffer from anaemia.

In the heat, pomegranate also makes up for the body's water shortage, and it goes well in a fruit salad. But after buying pomegranates at the market, many people cannot tell whether they will find red or white seeds once the skin is peeled.

Plenty of people have been cheated after buying a fruit because it looked red from outside. So here is how to tell whether a pomegranate is ripe when you buy it.

What to check

Shape: the shape shows whether a pomegranate is ripe. A ripe pomegranate is slightly three-cornered, and its outer skin is smooth.

Weight: if a pomegranate feels a little heavy in your hand, you can take it home without a second thought. A ripe pomegranate is always heavier, because it has more juice and seeds.

Colour: two kinds of pomegranate are seen in the market. One kind is pale greenish, while some are bright red. Always buy pomegranates by the red colour.
