A strip of zinnias blooms down the middle of a vegetable field in Rayalaseema, the dry south-west of Andhra Pradesh. Bees move between flowers and into the crop; hoverflies pause in the morning light; a ladybird hunts aphids under a leaf; a spider waits in a web strung between two chilli plants. A few steps away an old cotton saree covers a raised bed, and beneath it the soil is cool, dark and moist while the exposed ground has begun to harden in the heat. None of this appears in a harvest record — yet all of it is part of the harvest.
Farmers across the region are experimenting with ways to bring those relationships back: flower borders, companion crops, farm ponds, trees, staggered planting and discarded sarees, used alongside vegetable cultivation. Modern agriculture, the reporting argues, has become skilled at designing production — seed, irrigation, nutrients, expected yield — but a farm is more than its crop: where will pollinators feed before the vegetables flower, where will beneficial insects survive after harvest, how will soil life survive months of heat, where will rainwater slow instead of running off?
As landscapes simplified, trees vanished from field boundaries, flowering plants were cleared and bare soil became normal; the functions lost were replaced with purchased inputs — fertiliser for nutrients, pesticide for pest control, plastic sheet for ground cover. Rebuilding the ecology lets a farm supply some of those functions itself: a flowering border feeds and shelters pollinators and predators, a tree gives shade, organic matter and habitat, ground cover lowers soil temperature and holds moisture, a pond irrigates and harbours birds and insects.
Farmers working with the Watershed Support Services and Activities Network (WASSAN) grow flowering plants along field edges, mix crops for diversity, stagger planting so something is always in bloom and cover soil with organic material — practical concerns in a dry region, where moist soil means less crop stress and habitat for spiders means fewer pests. Under a tamarind tree, 79-year-old Venkataramana recalled trees on every bund when he was young, birds nesting and feeding on field insects, flood-irrigated pools where bees gathered, and households growing vegetables, pulses and oilseeds together — not for biodiversity, but because that was how farming and food were organised.
None of this replaces good farming or removes drought, pests or market risk; it makes a farm better able to respond to them, and it echoes the French organic vegetable farms that used ponds, fruit trees, companion crops and flowering herbs years earlier. The vegetables leave the field at harvest; the bees, spiders, birds, fungi and earthworms remain, preparing the ground for the next crop long before it is sown.
