A mobile court in Pirgachha, Rangpur, has sentenced a trader, Moshiur Rahman, 40, to one month's simple imprisonment and fined him Tk 20,000 for making counterfeit soybean oil at his home. The raid was carried out at his house in Guabari Balapara on the afternoon of Wednesday, 30 September.
According to the mobile court, Moshiur runs a retail and wholesale shop near the old bus stand at Pirgachha bazar. Behind that business he had for a long time been making fake soybean oil at home and selling it on the market.
Acting on a tip-off, Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tareq Hasan Tahsin led the raid. From three rooms on the ground floor of the two-storey house, officials seized 50 to 60 cartons of fake soybean oil, materials for making it, empty bottles and fake labels. Some of the seized goods were burnt on the spot.
During the raid the accused's people were alleged to have removed 10 to 12 barrels of oil in front of the officials. The magistrate said someone may have taken some oil without their knowledge, using the crowd that had gathered.
Such drives will continue regularly in the interest of consumer rights and the public, he said.
