To ease the ongoing heatwave and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the central Bangladesh Chhatra League has announced a programme to plant 5 lakh trees in ten days. As part of this, leaders and activists of the Rajshahi University (RU) unit of Chhatra League organised a tree-planting programme.

At 5pm on Tuesday (30 April), they planted more than a hundred trees at different points on campus and in front of the residential halls. They said another 10,000 trees would be planted in June.

RU Chhatra League president Mostafizur Rahman Babu said the heatwave was badly disrupting people's lives, and there was no alternative to planting trees to tackle the crisis caused by climate change. He said Bangladesh Chhatra League plants more than a lakh trees every year, and in the same spirit the central body had announced the 5 lakh-tree programme to bring relief from the heat and help meet the SDGs. To carry it out, the RU unit planted more than a hundred trees on the first day and will plant another 10,000 in June, he said.

RU Chhatra League general secretary Asadulla-Hil-Galib said the unit had planted 100 saplings as part of the central programme, and hall and unit leaders had been instructed to take the steps needed to look after them. "We have planned to plant another 10,000 trees in June," he said.
