Zahir Raihan of Mridha Danga village in Goalanda upazila, Rajbari, is an assistant teacher at Riaz Uddin Para Government Primary School. Alongside teaching, he started growing Shahi papaya commercially on two bighas this year and has drawn attention in the area, Krishi Shomoy's Rajbari correspondent reports.
About 220 Shahi papaya seedlings stand in rows on his land. Planting, land preparation and care have cost about Tk 200,000 so far, and every tree now carries large fruit.
With good soil and regular care, Raihan says, each papaya can weigh 5 to 8 kg. He hopes traders will buy straight from the field, saving transport costs. If all goes well he expects to sell about Tk 500,000 worth of green and ripe papaya and to clear at least Tk 300,000 after costs.
Goalanda upazila agriculture officer Syed Raihanul Haider says papaya was grown on 10 hectares in the upazila this year. He calls Raihan's orchard well organised, and says Goalanda's location and roads make it easy to send fruit to Rajbari, Faridpur and Dhaka.
