India begins national field trials of green ammonia in place of urea

A national initiative launched in Punjab aims to test green ammonia as a nitrogen source on 10,000 acres across India this rabi season, with 1,800 demonstrations in Punjab alone.

A national initiative to test green ammonia as an alternative to urea fertiliser was launched at Bijalpur village in Sangrur district, Punjab, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said.

Under the programme, 10,000 acres across India are to be covered during the 2026 rabi season so that green ammonia can be evaluated as a nitrogen source against conventional urea under field conditions.

In Punjab, six Krishi Vigyan Kendras, in Bathinda, Jalandhar, Moga, Amritsar, Sangrur and Hoshiarpur, will each run 300 demonstrations, 1,800 in the state.

The launch was attended by officials of ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Ludhiana, KVK Sangrur and 30 to 40 farmers from Sangrur, Mansa and Barnala districts. ICAR said the demonstrations would generate field evidence on green ammonia's potential for sustainable, science-based nutrient management.

ICAR officials reviewed a smaller demonstration on 300 acres of mustard in Mahendergarh, Haryana, earlier this month.
