Winter brings shorter days, more time indoors and windows kept shut, so dust, damp and dirt on the floor build up quickly. Ajker Patrika’s feature desk has set out some simple steps for putting the house in order before the cold fully sets in.
Start with the windows: wipe the glass, frames and seals so light can get in, and regularly mop up water that collects in the corners. Before switching on a heater that has stood unused for months, clean the dust inside it, or it will spread through the room and can irritate the airways.
Vacuum or sweep the carpets at the entrance, on the veranda and in the living room regularly, and treat stains at once with liquid detergent. A shoe rack and a spot for wet umbrellas by the door stop mud spreading across the floor. In the kitchen, wipe and disinfect cabinet handles, counters, the sink, the walls and the inside of the microwave.
On winter nights a closed bathroom gathers steam on walls and mirrors, which can lead to mould. Check that the exhaust fan works and wipe away excess steam after use. Put the blankets, kanthas, quilts and mattresses stored in cupboards out in the sun, and wash and sun-dry sofa cushion covers and spare sheets.
High places are often missed in weekly cleaning. Dust the tops of cupboards, door and picture frames and fan blades from top to bottom so everything falls to the floor at once. With windows closed, bin smells spread easily, so empty the bins regularly and wash them with disinfectant before drying them.
Trying to do it all in one day is exhausting. Split the work into daily jobs such as washing dishes, weekly jobs such as cleaning the bathroom and floors, and monthly jobs such as cleaning the heater and high places, and the house will stay clean all winter.
