Sweet shops in Dhaka did not see the crowds they expected on Saturday, 31 October, the day the HSC and equivalent exam results came out. Parents and relatives usually queue to buy sweets on results day; shopkeepers said a low pass rate had cut sales this time.

At Bikrampur Mistanna Bhandar, Alauddin Sweet, Azizia Mistanna Bhandar, Ros, Muslim Sweet, Cumilla Rasmalai and other shops, there was little business from morning to midday.

Rudra Kumar Ghosh, owner of Bikrampur Mistanna Bhandar in Fakirapool, said no student's parent had come to any of his branches all morning, and he doubted sales would reach even a fraction of those on SSC results day this year.

Ferdous Shyamal, owner of Grand Alauddin Sweetmeat in Naya Paltan, said intermittent rain and the low pass rate meant almost no sales, although they had made extra sweets for the day. Sohanur Rahman of Azizia Mistanna Bhandar in Dolaipar said he had not sold a single kilogram by midday.

The shopkeepers hoped sales would pick up in the afternoon or evening.
