"Milk" from jelly, soybean oil and sugar: Bhangura factory owner jailed for a year

A mobile court in Kaidanga, Bhangura, Pabna, seized and destroyed 2,700 litres of jelly, 200 kg of soybean oil and 320 litres of fake milk at a home factory, and jailed the owner for a year with a Tk 2 lakh fine.

It was not cow's milk but jelly, soybean oil, water and sugar blended together. On Friday 30 October a mobile court raided a factory making such "milk" at the home of Abul Bashar in Kaidanga Notunpara village, Bhangura upazila, Pabna.

The court seized 2,700 litres of jelly, 200 kg of soybean oil and 320 litres of fake milk, all later destroyed. Acting on a tip-off, members of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) had watched fake milk being made at the factory and asked the upazila nirbahi officer to hold a mobile court.

The court, led by upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate Suraiya Momtaz, sentenced Abul Bashar under section 52 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009 to a year in prison and a Tk 2 lakh fine, or three more months if unpaid. His employee Sabuj Hossain got six months and a Tk 50,000 fine for helping him.

Local people say ingredients for fake milk had been found in earlier raids on the same factory, but this was the first prison sentence. Residents allege he had long been making fake milk and selling it to various companies.

NSI Pabna deputy director A B M Lutful Kabir, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Nusrat Jahan and upazila sanitary inspector Md Nurul Islam were present, with Bhangura police assisting. Suraiya Momtaz said mobile courts would continue against traders adulterating children's food.

The report was filed by Ittefaq's Bhangura (Pabna) correspondent.
