Dr Monzil Murshed Diganta, a Bangladeshi hafiz, Islamic scholar and physician who grew up in Portugal, took first place ahead of competitors from many countries at the 32nd International Quran Competition 2026, held in Croatia. His win has been celebrated among Bangladeshis in Portugal.

According to Channel i Online, he works as a doctor at a hospital in Portugal and has long served as khatib of the Baitul Mukarram Jame Mosque there. During Ramadan he leads the tarawih prayers as a hafiz.

Bangladeshis in Portugal say the achievement is especially significant because he combines memorising the Quran with medical work and religious and humanitarian service.

The report also credits the long years of effort by his father, Haji Kamal Ahmed, in his education, memorisation of the Quran and religious learning. Kamal Ahmed is vice-president of the same mosque and active in religious and community work.
