Pirojpur's district livestock office, seven upazila livestock offices and veterinary hospitals have 25 people working against 87 sanctioned posts, leaving them struggling to serve a large number of cattle and poultry farms.
Livestock department figures list 742 dairy farms, 216 cattle-fattening farms, 332 goat farms and 27 buffalo farms in the district, along with 991 layer farms, 312 broiler, 172 Sonali, 134 duck and 36 pigeon farms. In FY2025-26 the district produced 161,000 tonnes of milk, 125,000 tonnes of meat and 16.87 lakh eggs, as the source gives the figure.
Seven posts at the district office are vacant and it runs on three staff. Sadar upazila has two people for 11 posts; all eight posts in Zianagar are vacant, and three people keep it going. About five posts are vacant in Nazirpur, eight in Mathbaria, about nine of 11 in Bhandaria, eight in Kawkhali and eight in Nesarabad.
Md Zulfiqar Khan, a farmer in Sadar with 20-25 cattle, said sick animals need prompt treatment but the hospital often has no vet or staff available, so he has to pay a private vet.
Mathbaria upazila livestock officer Dr Moha. Nur Alam said serving a large upazila with less than half the staff is hard and is affecting vaccination, free medical camps and courtyard meetings, though there is no shortage of medicine.
District livestock officer Dr Tarun Kumar Sikder said the shortage across the district is disrupting work, and service would improve once posts are filled.
