What Happens to the Body When You Eat Overripe Bananas

Bananas that turn dark and spotty carry more sugar and less fibre, and can harbour fungus that raises the risk of diarrhoea.

Crops

Leave ripe bananas at home for a single day and they over-ripen, with dark brown spots appearing on the yellow skin. Few people want to eat bananas like these.

But they are hard to throw away just because they have ripened a little too much. Many people mix very ripe bananas with flour to make pancakes. Is eating such bananas actually good for the body?

According to doctors, bananas like these can harm the body. Although bananas contain potassium, fibre, various vitamins and antioxidants, they can still do harm, because as a banana ripens further its sweetness increases.

That is why many people like to eat them, but it comes at a cost. When a banana over-ripens, its starch starts to break down and turns into sugar.

Compared with an ordinary yellow banana, one that has over-ripened and turned dark contains about 3 grams more sugar. Such bananas raise blood sugar. The fibre content of over-ripe bananas also falls, so they are not as good for health.

Bananas are perishable. Fungus can easily settle in over-ripe bananas, and it is not easily seen with the naked eye. Once it enters the stomach with food, it starts to cause trouble. Eating such over-ripe bananas raises the risk of diarrhoea.
