Local residents formed a human chain in Old Dhaka demanding regular food for the monkeys living in the area.

They formed the human chain on Saturday afternoon (2 October) in front of Sadhana Aushadhalaya on Dinanath Sen Road in Gendaria, in the capital. It was organised by the anti-drug organisation Prottasha.

Presiding over the event, Prottasha general secretary Helal Ahmed said that the city corporation used to provide around Tk 1,500 worth of food regularly at various spots in wards 38, 41 and 45 of the South City. The programme has been suspended for almost two years because of the coronavirus. As a result, the hungry monkeys are bothering households in different neighbourhoods in search of food, and some are falling ill and dying of starvation. To save these harmless animals from extinction, the protesters demanded that adequate food be provided urgently.

Khadija Binte Moni Piyasa, on behalf of the Lions Club of Dhaka Rose Garden, Bashir Uddin, Monir Hossain and Mofiz Uddin, among others, also spoke at the event.
