Free vaccination against peste des petits ruminants (PPR) for goats and sheep aged 3 to 12 months began in Naldanga, Natore, on Thursday under the PPR eradication and foot-and-mouth disease control project, with an opening at the Burir Bhag school ground in the municipality, Agricare24 reports.
The livestock office says the vaccine will be given in turn across the upazila's five unions and one municipality from 1 to 18 October. Upazila nirbahi officer Shammi Akter, veterinary surgeon Dr Md Abu Jafar Prang, office staff and goat and sheep keepers from different areas attended the launch.
Upazila livestock officer Dr Md Rakibul Hasan Sujan said PPR is a contagious disease of goats and sheep, and free vaccination is being provided by the government to reduce outbreaks and eradicate it. He urged farmers and keepers to bring all goats and sheep aged 3 to 12 months for vaccination within the set period.
Regular vaccination is important to protect the livestock sector and cut farmers' losses, UNO Shammi Akter said, asking everyone to help get goats and sheep vaccinated on time.
