The three-day National Vegetable Fair 2022 begins today at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) grounds in Farmgate in the capital.
Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque will open the fair on the afternoon of Monday (28 February).
Organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and held for the sixth time, the fair will run until 2 March, open daily from 10am to 8pm. It will have stalls from 52 government and private organisations.
Theme, human chain and seminar
Agriculture Secretary Md Sayedul Islam set out the details of the fair at a press conference in the ministry's conference room at the Secretariat on Sunday (27 February).
He said this year's theme is "Grow safe vegetables, for health and nutrition all year round". Before the opening, a human chain will be formed from the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to the KIB grounds. A seminar on "The contribution of vegetables to nutrition security and agricultural transformation" will then be held at the KIB auditorium, with the agriculture minister as chief guest.
The secretary said the fifth fair was held in January 2020, with 65 stalls and three pavilions. Vegetables worth Tk 30 lakh were sold over its three days.
Output up nearly sevenfold
Outlining vegetable production in recent years, the agriculture secretary said output has risen almost sevenfold over the past 12 years. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Bangladesh is now third in the world in vegetable production, after China and India.
He said agriculture contributes 13.29 percent of GDP, and 100 species of vegetables are now grown in the country.
