A modern fish farm has been built with a large investment in Chapainawabganj. The huge farm on 20 hectares at Bulonpur began two years ago, and local and foreign fruit trees have been planted on the banks of the planned Nawab Fish Farm's 36 ponds.
Fruit on the banks
The pond banks hold 400 malta trees, 500 Vietnamese coconut trees, about 600 dragon fruit plants, local and foreign papaya and bananas.
Aerators and automatic feeding
Aerators supply each pond with the oxygen the fish need, and feed is given by an automatic system. The most advanced methods are used in everything, including setting stocking density.
Entrepreneur Akbar Hossain said he sold about 200,000 taka worth of bananas at the last Eid ul-Fitr, from a variety he collected in Puthia, Rajshahi. He is stocking pangas at 300 fish per decimal.
Export ambitions
He has many dreams for the fish industry and wants to build a hatchery. He hopes that Bangladesh, alongside Vietnam and Myanmar, can win a place in fish exports.
This is industrialisation of fish production on a large scale. Producing fish with planned and precise techniques means making the country more self-sufficient in fish, and there is hope Bangladesh will soon join the fish export trade.
