Police in Mithamain upazila of Kishoreganj have arrested two men with 111 sacks of subsidised urea fertiliser allocated for farmers, and seized the two trolleys carrying it, Ekattor TV reports. A case has been filed at Mithamain police station against four people, including a licensed fertiliser dealer.
Local people said the urea was being moved on two trolleys in Katkhal union at about 11am on Monday, 28 September. Suspicious, they stopped the trolleys and called the police and the agriculture department. A team led by Md Gaffar, in charge of the Katkhal police outpost, searched the trolleys and recovered the fertiliser.
ASI Abdullah Al Mamun of Mithamain police station said on Tuesday, 29 September that those arrested are Shahin Mia and Zahir Mia. Licensed dealer Mustafizul Islam Ratan and a man named Liton are also accused in the case.
Mithamain upazila agriculture officer Obaidul Islam Khan Apu said the fertiliser was being taken from one union to another without the agriculture department's permission or any notice. Moving large quantities without informing the department is not allowed even within the upazila, he said, and anyone found manipulating the sale or supply of government fertiliser will face strict legal action.
