Mango picking times have been fixed by variety in Meherpur. The season will begin on 15 May with the picking of Guti and Bombai mangoes. However, mangoes may be picked earlier with the permission of the upazila administration for special reasons such as weather, temperature or rainfall.

The list was published at around 12:30pm on 8 May in the district administration's conference room. The decision was taken after discussions with local mango growers and traders to ensure that safe, toxin-free and mature mangoes reach the market.

Deputy Commissioner Azizul Islam and Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) deputy director Shankar Kumar Majumder were among those present.

Under the list, picking of Guti and Bombai mangoes will begin on 15 May. Growers will then pick Himsagar from 25 May, Langra from 28 May, Amrapali from 6 June and Fazli from 20 June, according to the schedule.

According to the Meherpur DAE, the district has a target of producing 40,000 metric tonnes of mangoes on 2,340 hectares, or 17 to 18 metric tonnes a hectare.

Meherpur Deputy Commissioner Azizul Islam said mango growers and the agriculture office had set the picking dates after checking in the field. Guti mangoes usually ripen first, so their picking will start on 15 May, followed by the others in turn.

DAE deputy director Shankar Kumar Majumder told Jago News that the list had been published after discussions with local mango growers and traders to ensure that safe, toxin-free and mature mangoes are marketed. Action will be taken against anyone who picks mangoes from orchards before the set time, he said.
