Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam has called for planting more trees to tackle climate risk.
He said buildings had been put up in the city by cutting down trees, and that if trees were not planted in a planned way, it would become a serious threat to the environment.
He made the call on 5 October at an MoU signing ceremony in the conference room on the sixth floor of Nagar Bhaban, the DNCC headquarters.
"Time to think anew"
"In the past we have only destroyed forests for our own needs. We thought only of our own gain. But we never once thought about the next generation. So today the time has come to think anew," Atiqul Islam said.
He stressed planting more trees to tackle the climate crisis and curb air pollution, and spoke of the plan to plant trees by finding new spaces while keeping the existing ones.
Earlier, DNCC signed an MoU with three organisations for planned tree planting on that basis. Chief town planner Maksud Hashem signed for DNCC, founder Ahsan Rony for Green Savers, group company secretary Mostafa Kamal for LankaBangla and president Nasrin Akter for Community Town Federation.
