The Nutrients Hidden in Mango Peel

Mango peel, usually thrown away, is rich in fibre, antioxidants and vitamins, and several studies suggest it holds more nutrients than the flesh.

Fruits

It is hard to find anyone who does not like mangoes. Most people peel the fruit and eat only the juicy flesh inside, but many may not know that the peel is also full of nutrients. Several studies have found that mango peel contains more nutrients than the fruit itself.

A study by the University of Queensland School of Pharmacy found that mango peel helps with weight loss because it reduces the formation of fat cells. Some research also suggests a role in fighting cancer cells and even in controlling diabetes.

How mango peel benefits the body

  • Mango peel is full of plant compounds, fibre and antioxidants, which boost immunity and help slow ageing. The skin is also rich in vitamins A, C and K, folate, magnesium, choline and potassium.
  • Powerful antioxidants in the peel, such as mangiferin, norathyriol and resveratrol, may help prevent certain types of cancer.
  • According to a Harvard study of men, those who regularly ate mango peel had a 40 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Being rich in fibre, the peel is also good for the digestive system.
  • Mango peel helps control diabetes and keeps blood sugar levels in check, so people with diabetes can eat it regularly.
  • It is good for the skin. Dried mango peel powder mixed with yoghurt makes a face pack that removes blemishes and sun tan.
  • Mango peel powder can even protect the skin from the sun. Mix the powder with a few drops of lotion and apply it to exposed skin such as the face, arms and legs. The vitamins E and C in the peel work as an anti-tanning agent.

How to eat mango peel

Wash mangoes well and get into the habit of eating them with the skin on. If you cannot swallow the peel, chew it and drink the juice. You can also blend the mango with its peel and drink it, or dry the peel, grind it to a powder and mix it into water.
