The Livestock and Dairy Development Project held the nationwide Livestock Exhibition 2022 on Wednesday. The central event was at the old trade fair ground (Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Agargaon), where a hundred kinds of animals and birds were on show together.

Improved and high-yielding animals and birds came from different parts of the country: cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep, elephants, horses, chickens, ducks, dumba (fat-tailed sheep), pigeons and more, a hundred kinds in all.

There were also stalls on technology, medicines and vaccines used in livestock development, equipment for producing and storing animal products, and packaging and marketing technology.

The organisers said 110 stalls were set up at the central exhibition in Dhaka for different value chains, and every one of them displayed some kind of animal.

Akbar Alam, owner of Farm Field Agro in Keraniganj, brought several crossbred cows that give up to 31 litres of milk. Other farmers were coming to his stall for advice.

Next door, Sadiq Agro had three cows of the same breed with a slightly higher capacity, giving 36 to 42 litres of milk.

Visitors were charmed by the birds, with various kinds of fancy birds at 20-25 stalls. The owner of M&A Aviary, from Fatullah in Narayanganj, said his farm has more than 300 lovebirds, some of which he brought to the exhibition. Visitors were looking at them and getting in touch to buy.

Many were unhappy that the exhibition lasted only one day. The organisers said it was kept to one day because of various problems for the animals and birds.

The Livestock and Dairy Development Project of the Department of Livestock Services, under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, organised the event across the country for the first time. It was held simultaneously in 499 upazilas of the 61 districts covered by the project.

Visitor Faridul Islam said the initiative certainly deserves praise and is a very good one.

Thirty-one prizes in 11 categories and crests were given to participants on various criteria, and all participants received certificates. A food safety corner at the exhibition held awareness displays on preparing safe food and sold various products.
