A hilsa weighing 2 kilograms 750 grams has sold for Tk 13,250 in Kamalnagar, Laxmipur. Fisherman Faruk Majhi sold it at the upazila's Motirhat fish ghat on Thursday afternoon (24 September).

Ghat wholesaler Ibrahim Khokon said Faruk Majhi returned after a week in the Bay of Bengal and sold about Tk 1.5 lakh worth of hilsa, of which the big fish went separately for Tk 13,250. It was bought by Dhaka fish trader Bahar Mia.

Bahar Mia said he buys hilsa here to sell in Dhaka and expects to make at least Tk 1,000 to Tk 2,000 on the big fish; a hilsa that size sells for about Tk 16,000 to Tk 17,000 in Dhaka. Small fish earn a profit of Tk 50 to Tk 100 a kilogram, he said, but big hilsa pay better.

Local wholesaler Anwar Hossain said hilsa has become scarce in the rivers, and rising fuel prices have made fishing harder; fishers at sea are getting moderate catches.
