What You Should Know Before Eating Latkan

Latkan is a nutritious rainy-season fruit, but a few health points are worth knowing before eating it in large amounts.

Fruits

Latkan is one of the most popular fruits of the rainy season. Small, round and pale yellow, its sweet-and-sour taste makes it a favourite with people of all ages. In different parts of Bangladesh it is also known as "bubi", "harfata" or "lotka". Its popularity as a seasonal fruit is growing, not only for its taste but also for its nutritional value.

Many people, however, eat too much latkan without knowing better or ignore some health issues, and instead of benefiting they may end up with discomfort or physical problems. So it is important to know a few things before eating it.

What latkan contains

Latkan contains vitamin C, calcium, iron, phosphorus and dietary fibre. As a good source of vitamin C in particular, it helps boost immunity, and its antioxidants protect the body's cells from damage. A 100-gram serving usually provides vitamin C, calcium, fibre, a little protein, carbohydrates and antioxidants.

The vitamin C in latkan helps strengthen the immune system and may help a little during seasonal colds, coughs or viral illness. Eaten regularly in moderation, it keeps the body fresh.

The fibre helps keep digestion normal and may help relieve constipation, but eating too much can cause acidity or bloating.

Problems from eating too much

Many people eat a lot of latkan at once, but too much sour fruit is not always good for the body.

  • Acidity may worsen: people with gastric problems, ulcers or acidity may get heartburn or stomach discomfort from eating too much.
  • Teeth may be harmed: latkan's sourness can affect tooth enamel, and eating a lot can cause tingling or sensitivity, so it is best to rinse the mouth with clean water afterwards.
  • Diarrhoea or upset stomach: eating too much can give some people an upset stomach, loose motions or digestive trouble. Take special care with children.

Diabetes, children and cleaning

Latkan contains natural sugar, but relatively little, so people with diabetes can eat it in limited amounts. It is better not to eat a lot at once, and it is safest to follow a doctor's or nutritionist's advice.

Latkan seeds are large and hard, so care is needed when giving it to young children, who may accidentally swallow them. They should eat it under adult supervision.

Harmful chemicals are sometimes used in markets to ripen or preserve fruit quickly, so wash latkan well in clean water after buying. If possible, soak it in water for a while before washing.

Besides being eaten raw, latkan can be made into pickle, juice, jam and various sweet-and-sour foods; latkan pickle is especially popular in rural areas.

With its taste, nutrition and seasonal variety, latkan is undoubtedly a beneficial fruit. But like any food, it matters to eat it in moderation. Eaten mindfully and with your health in mind, this small fruit can be a healthy food for the hot and rainy seasons. The information draws on Binni Food and PinpointMax.
