The Foods Behind One in Five Early Deaths

A Lancet analysis finds that diet is responsible for one in five deaths worldwide, killing more than 10 million people a year.

Diet is shortening the lives of one in five people. A study shows that more than 10 million people die every year because of food alone.

An analysis published in the Lancet shows that everyday diet kills more people than smoking and is responsible for one in five deaths worldwide.

Take salt, for example: whether it is in bread, sauces or meat, it plays a particular role in shortening lives.

The researchers say the study is not only about obesity; it looked at how poor-quality diets damage the heart or cause cancer. The Global Burden of Disease Study is an important piece of research that looks at how people are dying in every corner of the world.

The dangerous elements

The dietary factors identified as dangerous are:

  • Too much salt: 3 million deaths
  • Too few whole grains: 3 million deaths
  • Too little fruit: 2 million deaths

Low intake of nuts, seeds, vegetables, omega-3 from seafood and fibre is also among the main causes of death.
