Kushtia farmers travel for animal care as subcentre stays shut for 20 years

A government veterinary subcentre at Poronkhali Bazar in Bheramara has stood idle for about two decades without doctors, staff or equipment.

A government veterinary subcentre at Poronkhali Bazar in Juniadah union, Bheramara, Kushtia, has been closed for about 20 years. Without a doctor, staff or equipment, the centre no longer gives the advice, artificial insemination and basic treatment it once did.

The union now has many poultry and dairy farms, and owners must take sick animals to the upazila town. "It adds to the hardship and raises the cost," said cattle keeper Hasan Ali. Farmer Mizanur Rahman said calling a local animal doctor is expensive. Residents say animals sometimes die for lack of proper care.

Locals say the building has fallen into disrepair, has no boundary wall and lacks furniture, equipment and medicine.

Bheramara upazila livestock officer Dr Md Tarek Hasan said 495 artificial insemination workers are being recruited by the government and staff may be posted there if available. A request for a boundary wall and building work has also been submitted.

District livestock officer Dr Md Al Mamun Hossain Mondal said he has visited the centre, which has one volunteer but no government staff and needs repairs and spending to reopen. He said he hopes to reopen it soon.
