India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the export of 1.3 metric tonnes of Sinduri pomegranates from Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh to Dubai, AgroSpectrum reports.
The consignment of 650 boxes of 2 kg each was exported by the Uttar Pradesh firm Amama Exports. The fruit was sourced directly from local farmers and the Bhuntar Farmer Producer Organisation, which is associated with about 600 farmers. The Kullu district horticulture administration helped with procurement and coordination.
Sinduri is one of the pomegranate varieties grown in Himachal Pradesh, along with Bhagwa and Kandhari. It is known for its red skin, juicy arils and sweet-tart flavour, and is suited to fresh consumption and export.
The shipment is small, but its point is the link it makes between hill growers and an exporter with access to overseas buyers.
