A sky lantern released to welcome the New Year in Germany suddenly came down in a zoo. It set fire to the zoo's ape house, killing at least 30 animals, including gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees.
The fire broke out at midnight on New Year at Krefeld Zoo in Germany. Police said it was started by a New Year sky lantern and killed 30 animals there. Whether there was any other damage is being investigated.
Police added that although releasing such lanterns is banned in Germany, some people still release them to celebrate the New Year. Three lanterns were also found near the scene.
Two chimpanzees survive
Krefeld Zoo said on Facebook on Wednesday that after the fire started it spread through the whole enclosure. Two chimpanzees in the enclosure, named Bally and Limbo, survived; all the others died. The enclosure is no longer fit for use and no animals can be kept there, so a new one is being planned, the zoo said.
Krefeld Zoo in Germany was founded in 1975. The 2,000-square-metre zoo houses birds, bats, monkeys and various other species.
