Lamia Akter, 21, the wife of an expatriate worker, has died of a snakebite in Kalkini, Madaripur.

She died while undergoing treatment on the morning of Thursday, 10 August. Lamia Akter was the daughter of Lokman Howlader of the Pangasia area of Kalkini upazila.

According to her family and local sources, Lamia married Bellal Sheikh, a Saudi Arabia-based expatriate from the Kaliganj area of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira, a few years ago. They have a daughter. With her husband abroad, Lamia spent most of her time at her father's home.

On the night of Wednesday, 9 August, Lamia went out of the house to use the bathroom, and a venomous snake bit her on the foot. When she screamed, her family came running. They all saw a frog at the spot and assumed it was a frog that had bitten her. Lamia Akter then went to bed. Shortly afterwards she began to feel severe pain throughout her body. Early on Thursday her family took her to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where she died while undergoing treatment.

Kalkini police station officer-in-charge (OC) Nazmul Hossain said he had not been informed of a death from snakebite and learned of it through journalists. The matter will now be looked into, he said.
