About 150 maunds of fish have died after miscreants poisoned a fish farm in Kaliganj, Gazipur. The incident took place in Bhasania village of Nagari union in the upazila.

The farm's owner, Golam Kibria, a trainee lawyer at the Dhaka Judge Court, told journalists about it on Saturday morning. He had earlier filed a written complaint with Kaliganj police station on Friday.

Confirming the complaint, Sub-Inspector (SI) Zakir Hossain, in charge of the Ulukhola police outpost under Kaliganj police station, said the lawyer had bought land in the Bhasania area of Nagari union and set up the fish farm as a hobby. Two days earlier, someone had poured poison into the farm under cover of darkness, and all the fish in the lawyer's farm died and floated to the surface.

SI Zakir said: "On receiving a written complaint about the incident, I went to the spot and found the allegation to be true. Legal action is in process."

Lawyer Golam Kibria said that on 13 October Mokles, the caretaker of his fish farm, phoned him to say the fish in the pond were dying and floating up. When he arrived, he found about 150 maunds of fish of various species that he had released in the farm dead on the surface.
