Aman rice has been planted on slightly more land than targeted in Jhalokathi this season. The Department of Agricultural Extension said the district's target was 46,772 hectares and planting reached 46,774 hectares.
The target for high-yielding varieties was 11,750 hectares and 11,504 hectares were planted, 246 hectares short. For local varieties the target was 35,022 hectares and 35,270 hectares were planted, 248 hectares above target.
By the department's reckoning, Jhalokathi's soils can give an average of 1.75 tonnes of rice a hectare from local aman varieties and 2.8 tonnes from high-yielding ones. If the weather stays favourable and there is no major disaster, the district could produce about 93,500 tonnes of rice from aman this season.
Notable local varieties grown in the district include Nakuchi Mota, Moulata, Betichikon, Sadamota, Lalchikon, Lalmota, Banshful and Orogora. Among high-yielding varieties, BRRI dhan52, BR23 and BRRI dhan77 are the most widely grown.
Agriculture officials expect a good harvest if the weather holds, and say this season's crop will play an important part in the district's food production.
