The Beltala mango market in Sharsha, Jashore, is now in full swing. Early in the season, when Gobindabhog, Gopalbhog, Golapkhas and seedling mangoes came to market, trade was normal. But since Cyclone Remal, prices have been on fire.

Himsagar mangoes have leapt from Tk 1,800 to Tk 4,500 a maund, Langra from Tk 1,700 to Tk 3,300, and Amrapali from Tk 1,100 to Tk 2,600 a maund.

Mango picking began in early May this year. Before Cyclone Remal, supply in the market was high and prices held, but after the cyclone mango prices went up.

Mango growers Azgar Ali and Ziarul of Tengra village in Sharsha said prices are higher this year, so their profit will be double last year's.

Sharsha upazila agriculture officer Dipak Kumar said mango growers would gain greatly, as they had never before been able to sell at such high prices.

He said two tonnes of Langra and Himsagar mangoes had been exported abroad from Sharsha upazila this season.
