Insects have been found inside buns handed out under the government school-feeding programme in Chilmari, Kurigram. On Thursday afternoon, as snacks were being given out at Thanahat No. 2 Model Government Primary School, a pupil opened a packet, saw insects in the bun and told the teachers. As word spread, parents reacted with anger and alarm.

The upazila primary education office says pupils at Chilmari's 93 government primary schools regularly receive a bun, a banana and an egg. The programme is run by the non-government Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO), and GUK, an organisation based in Gaibandha, supplies 12,216 buns a day to the 93 schools.

Parents say the supplier's representatives quickly took away the infested bun once the news got out. One parent, Golzar Hossain, asked how children's health could be protected if food meant to nourish them contained insects, and said it must be checked whether the food is tested before it is delivered. Parents want a proper inquiry and action against those responsible.

ESDO's upazila coordinator, Mahfuza Begum Sweety, confirmed the incident and said the bun was replaced as soon as the complaint came in. Assistant teacher Md Rabiul Islam said the school informed higher authorities straight away.

Upazila primary education officer Md Kamruzzaman said action had been taken. The head teacher has been told to send back every bun in that consignment and to record the spoiled, infested buns formally on the bill so that they are not paid for.

The report is by Samakal's Chilmari (Kurigram) correspondent.
