The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has forecast heavy rain over the next three days in Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions, which could cause short-term flooding there.

On Sunday (21 June) the centre said all the country's major rivers were flowing below the danger level. However, the Teesta was at the warning level at the Dalia (Nilphamari), Kaunia (Rangpur) and Bharapur (Gaibandha) stations; the Surma at Kanaighat (Sylhet), Chhatak (Sunamganj) and Sunamganj (Sunamganj); the Kushiyara at Fenchuganj (Sylhet); and the Someshwari at Kalmakanda (Netrokona).

Over the past 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rain fell in parts of Chattogram division, and moderately heavy to heavy rain in Rangpur and Sylhet divisions. Upstream, very heavy rain fell in India's Meghalaya, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.

According to weather agencies, heavy to very heavy rain is forecast over the next three days in Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions and the adjoining upstream areas of India's West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya, followed by moderately heavy to heavy rain for two days.

The centre said the Brahmaputra rose over the past 24 hours while the Jamuna was steady. These rivers could rise over the next five days but are likely to stay below the danger level.

The Ganges rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for two days before holding steady for three. The Padma was steady and may stay so for two days before rising for three, but it is likely to remain below the danger level.

The Surma and Kushiyara in the north-east rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for three days. During this time they could flow above the danger level in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, causing short-term flooding in low-lying riverside areas.

• Rangpur division: the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for three days. Within 72 hours they could flow above the danger level in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Rangpur districts, causing short-term flooding in low-lying riverside areas.
• Mymensingh division: the Someshwari, Jinjiram and Bhugai fell over the past 24 hours while the Kangsha rose. These rivers may rise over the next three days and could reach the warning level in Netrokona, Mymensingh and Sherpur districts, temporarily flooding some low-lying riverside areas.
• Sylhet division: the Sarigowain and Jadukata rose over the past 24 hours while the Manu, Dhalai and Khowai fell; these rivers may rise over the next three days.
• Chattogram division: the Muhuri and Halda fell over the past 24 hours, while the Feni, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri, Selonia and Gumti were steady. These rivers may rise rapidly over the next three days.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department, in a heavy rain warning, said that under the influence of the active south-west monsoon, heavy (44-88mm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain may fall at places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions over the 48 hours from 9am today (21 June).
