Life brings many hardships: the loss of loved ones, money troubles, worry. A believer sees these hard times differently, trusting that no decree of Allah is without good.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'If Allah wants good for someone, He afflicts him with trials.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5645)
The hadith shows that hardship in a believer's life is not always a sign of punishment. Through it Allah forgives sins, raises a person's rank and gives the chance to turn back to Him. In good times busyness and comfort can pull people away from remembering Allah; in hardship they see their own weakness and ask for His help.
In another hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whatever fatigue, illness, worry, grief, harm or distress befalls a Muslim, even a thorn that pricks him, Allah expiates some of his sins because of it. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5641)
Patience, trust in Allah and repentance for one's mistakes are therefore the believer's response, rather than despair. Alongside praying for relief, it matters to understand the lesson of the trial; what feels like pain may be opening the door to great good in this world and the next.
