After the flash floods, loan instalments have become the biggest burden for the people of the haor. Farmers and fishing families wanted relief from this load in their worst times, but it has not come.
Lenders still collecting
The floodwaters have stopped, and the fields of paddy are only a memory. Very poor farmers and fishing families get one meal or half a meal a day through various aid, but although everything has stalled, regular creditors are still active.
Haor people say most farmers and fishers there depend on NGO loans for cash.
A call not heard
On 30 April, the Prime Minister visited the stricken haor people and called on lenders to be humane. The unfortunate haor people say the call has not reached those it was meant for.
The lending NGOs deny the complaints in various ways, but they have no answer when asked to disprove them.
