Islam asks for balance and moderation even in ordinary, permitted activities. A review of the hadiths finds at least ten things the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) discouraged doing to excess. Here are some of them.
Excessive laughter: laughing is permitted, but not constant joking. Hadith 4193 in Ibn Majah says too much laughter deadens the heart, and hadith 2315 in Tirmidhi warns of ruin for those who lie to make people laugh.
Excessive oaths in trade: hadith 1607 in Muslim and 4460 in Nasa'i say constant swearing may boost sales for a while but destroys the blessing of trade and the buyer's trust.
Needless questions: hadith 1417 in Bukhari says Allah dislikes idle talk, wasting wealth and asking too many questions, including prying into others' private affairs or asking repeatedly about imaginary matters unrelated to life.
The piece's central message is that spiritual well-being lies in a balanced life.
