A farmer in Madhabpur, Habiganj, lost his 250-decimal tomato crop after spraying a pesticide bought on the advice of a company's representative, his family alleges. Giridhan Sarkar's family puts the loss at about Tk 1.6 million; he fell ill watching the field die and is in hospital. The incident took place on 7 October, Krishi Shomoy reports.

The family says Giridhan grew the tomatoes on borrowed money. As the plants filled with flowers and fruit, pests appeared. He went to Bismillah Bij Bhandar in Madhabpur bazar, spoke to Md Monirul Islam, a representative of the company Autochemical, bought a pesticide and sprayed it.

Soon afterwards the plants began to turn white, many rotted at the base, and in the end the whole field was damaged, the family says. The report carries no response from the representative or the company.

Giridhan's brother, Raydhan Sarkar, headteacher of Sultanpur High School, has filed written complaints with the upazila executive officer and the upazila agriculture officer seeking compensation and legal action.

Upazila executive officer Md Mehedi Hasan said the upazila agriculture officer has been told to investigate on the ground and act, and officials are looking at how the farmer could be helped through government incentives.
