Ginger at the market beside Hili land port in Dinajpur has risen by Tk 40 to Tk 60 a kilo in a week. Ginger that sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120 a kilo was selling at Tk 140 to Tk 160 on the morning of Thursday, 5 November.
No shop in the Hili market in Hakimpur upazila had local ginger. What is on sale is mainly imported Chinese ginger.
Trader Shakil Ahmed said there is no local supply because the season is over. Imports from China and India had been meeting demand, and prices were normal while Indian ginger came in large quantities. Imports from India have now fallen and prices in China have risen somewhat. Traders hope prices will come down if China's fall and supply improves.
Buyer Keya Rani said she is buying less ginger than she needs because of the price, and asked the government to monitor the market and look into the rise. Another buyer, Usman Ali, said rising prices across many goods are making life hard for people on limited incomes.
Borhan Uddin, assistant director at the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, said regular monitoring and raids are under way so that no trader can raise prices through an artificial shortage, and that buying and selling prices are being checked against receipts.
