Gene-edited soya flowers early enough for Britain in Corteva's Wellesbourne field trial

Soya's biggest obstacle in Britain is not the soil or the summer but the calendar: the crop must mature before autumn weather arrives. Corteva Agriscience believes gene editing may remove that barrier. At its trial site in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, plants edited with Crispr-Cas to flower early had already set pods in early September while the unedited late-maturing lines they came from were still in flower.

The work is part of a five-year collaboration with the French research institute INRAE, with much of the early research done by PhD student Manon Monfort. Dr Frank Röber, who leads Corteva's Europe breeding alliance, told Farmers Weekly the first field results were beyond expectations.

Soya is a short-day plant: long northern summer days delay flowering and push maturity into the wet autumn, so Britain needs very early '00' or '000' maturity groups, which generally yield less than the later groups grown in the United States. Corteva's approach is to edit the genes that suppress flowering so that the yield potential of later genetics can be carried into an early-maturing plant.

Field testing is essential, said Dr Nancy Podevin, the company's genome-editing policy lead, and England's Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act 2023 and its 2025 regulations make that possible through a Defra release notice for research trials. The European Union's new framework for plants bred with new genomic techniques entered into force in July 2026 but its main provisions apply only from July 2028, which Corteva says leaves England with the more proportionate route for field research.

The next test is whether earliness can be combined with yield, disease resistance and reliable harvestability, since existing early varieties often carry a yield penalty. Corteva sees soya becoming a useful British break crop and a source of home-grown protein, fixing nitrogen through rhizobia and adding diversity to rotations, though a commercial crop will depend on solving both the agronomy and the regulation.
