Dr Md Abdul Muyeed, director general of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), went to see Dutch tulips blooming in the garden of flower grower Delwar Hossain in Sreepur upazila, Gazipur.
He visited the tulip garden on the morning of Friday (7 February), after Jagonews published a report headlined "Dutch tulips in Gazipur: Delwar springs a surprise".
Dr Md Abdul Muyeed said: "European countries get very cold, even snow. Tulips grow in those lands of ice and cold. The success Delwar Hossain has shown today by growing tulips of different colours in Bangladeshi soil has amazed me. We will talk to the agriculture minister, the secretary and the scientists concerned about it. It is possible to grow tulips successfully in Bangladesh. Surely many growers like Delwar will come forward and tulip cultivation will grow in Bangladesh too. In future we may see tulips as an exportable product."
"My first time seeing tulips here"
At about noon, Abdul Muyeed visited the tulip garden of Delwar, who had caused a stir by growing Dutch tulips in Sreepur, Gazipur.
After seeing the garden, he said: "We get three or four months of cold, then the heat comes. Whether you call it flowers or fruit, each behaves differently here. We have not yet been able to grow apples, but oranges grow in our country. Grower Delwar's initiative is extraordinary. He started and he has succeeded. I was amazed myself. This is my first time seeing tulips in the soil of my Bangladesh."
Accompanying director general Dr Md Abdul Muyeed on the visit were Md Mahbub Alam, deputy director of the DAE Gazipur office; additional deputy director Muhammad Shah Alam; Rafiqul Islam Khan; and Sreepur upazila agriculture officer ASM Muyidul Hasan, among others.
A thousand bulbs from the Netherlands
Gazipur flower grower Delwar Hossain brought 1,000 tulip bulbs of one species in four colours from the Netherlands on 8 December and planted them in his garden on 15 December.
After 45 days of care, the tulips began blooming in the last week of January. Jagonews reported on it, and right after the report people from several nearby upazilas crowded to see Delwar's garden. It was against this background that DAE director general Dr Md Abdul Muyeed visited the garden on Friday.
