Heavy to very heavy rainfall may cause floods in eight districts of the country in the next 24 to 72 hours. During this time rivers in several districts may flow at warning level and low-lying riverside areas may be inundated.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) gave the warning in a bulletin on 19 July.

Citing weather agencies, the FFWC said heavy to very heavy rain is forecast over the next two days in Rangpur and Sylhet divisions inside the country and, upstream, in the Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal.

Over the past 24 hours water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur division remained steady but may rise over the next three days. In the next 24 to 48 hours the rivers may flow above danger level at some points, and flash or short-term floods may occur in some low-lying riverside areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.

In the past 24 hours the Surma rose in the north-east, while the Kushiyara remained steady; both may rise over the next three days. In the next 48 hours the rivers may flow above danger level at some points, and short-term floods may occur in some low-lying riverside areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, or the flood situation may remain steady.

The Brahmaputra remained steady over the past 24 hours, while the Jamuna rose and may keep rising for the next five days. From 20 to 24 July the Brahmaputra-Jamuna may flow at warning level at some points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail districts, and some low-lying riverside areas may be inundated.

In the past 24 hours the Sarigowain, Jadukata and Kangsha rivers in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions remained steady, while the Someshwari and Bhugai rose. The levels of these rivers may rise over the next three days.

In the next 24 to 72 hours the Someshwari in Netrokona district may flow above danger level at some points, and short-term floods may occur in some low-lying riverside areas.

In the past 24 hours the Upper Karatoya, Upper Atrai, Tangon, Punarbhaba, Mahananda and Jamuneshwari rivers in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions rose, while the Ghaghat, Atrai, Karatoya and Chhoto Jamuna fell. The levels of these rivers may rise over the next three days.

Among stations monitored by the FFWC, the Kushiyara is flowing above danger level at Fenchuganj in Sylhet and at Markuli station in Sunamganj.
