Short-term flooding may occur, or the existing situation may worsen somewhat, in places in the low-lying riverside areas of nine districts in the country's north-east and north within the next 24 to 48 hours.

This was stated in the regular forecast of the Bangladesh Water Development Board's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Monday, 13 July. According to its latest forecast, short-term flooding may develop or worsen in places in the low-lying riverside areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Sherpur and Mymensingh in the north-east, and Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur and Kurigram in the north.

The forecasting centre also said water is currently flowing above the danger level at four stations on four rivers: the Surma at Chhatak (Sunamganj), the Kushiyara at Markuli (Sunamganj) and Fenchuganj (Sylhet), and the Someshwari at Kalmakanda (Netrokona).

On the other hand, the centre forecast an improvement in the hill region. The flood situation in the low-lying areas along the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in Bandarban, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar districts may continue to improve over the next 24 hours, the forecast said.
