Rivers in the country's north and north-east are rising steadily. The Kushiyara in the Sylhet region has already crossed its danger level, prompting a flood warning for low-lying areas along the river. Riverside low-lying areas of Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions are also at risk of flooding.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre gave the information in its river situation and forecast bulletin on Sunday, 28 June.
The bulletin said the Kushiyara is flowing 4 centimetres above its danger level at the Fenchuganj (Sylhet) station. The Teesta at Dalia (Nilphamari), the Kushiyara at Markuli (Sunamganj) and the Someshwari at Kalmakanda (Netrokona) are flowing at their warning levels.
North-east and Brahmaputra-Jamuna
Water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in the north-east rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for the next three days. Within 72 hours these rivers may cross danger levels at several points in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, and short-term flooding may occur in adjacent low-lying areas.
The Brahmaputra-Jamuna also rose over the past 24 hours, and the rise may continue for five days. From 1 to 3 July the Brahmaputra-Jamuna may flow at warning level in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogura districts, and adjacent low-lying areas may be inundated in places.
In the Ganges-Padma system, the Ganges fell over the past 24 hours while the Padma rose. Levels may stay stable for two days and rise for the following three, but are expected to remain below danger level.
Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh
In Rangpur division in the north, the Teesta, Dudhkumar and Dharla were stable over the past 24 hours but may rise over the next three days. Within 48 hours these rivers may flow above danger level, and short-term flooding may develop in riverside low-lying areas of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur and Gaibandha districts.
The Bhugai-Kangsha and Someshwari rivers of Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions may flow at warning level in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrokona districts, and adjacent low-lying areas may be temporarily inundated in places.
