Heavy rainfall may cause floods again in seven districts of the country in the next 24 to 72 hours. Rivers in several districts may also flow at warning level during this time and low-lying riverside areas may be inundated.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) gave the warning in a bulletin on 18 July.
Teesta and Surma-Kushiyara
Describing the current state of the rivers, the FFWC said the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar in Rangpur division remained steady over the past 24 hours but may rise over the next three days. As a result, in the next 24 to 48 hours these rivers may flow above danger level at some points, and short-term floods may occur in some low-lying riverside areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.
The Surma-Kushiyara in the north-east also rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for the next three days. In the next 72 hours they may flow above danger level at some points, and short-term floods may occur in some low-lying riverside areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, or the flood situation may remain steady.
Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma
The FFWC said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for the next five days. On the third to fifth days (20-22 July), the Brahmaputra and Jamuna may flow at warning level at some points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail districts, and some low-lying riverside areas may be inundated.
Higher tides on the coast
Coastal rivers in Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram divisions, including the Kirtankhola, Lower Meghna, Pasur, Ichamati, Karnaphuli, Little Feni and Noakhali Khal, are currently seeing higher than normal tides, which may continue for another day, the FFWC added.
