Heavy rain in several parts of the country and upstream could cause short-term flooding in 10 districts in three divisions within the next 24 to 48 hours. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board gave the warning in a forecast on the state of the country's rivers on Wednesday, 5 August.
Sylhet and Sunamganj
The forecast said the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in the north-east rose over the past 24 hours. They may keep rising for the next two days and hold steady on the third. In the next 24 to 48 hours they may flow above danger level at some points in Sylhet and Sunamganj, causing short-term flooding in places in low-lying riverside areas.
Rangpur division
The Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern Rangpur division also rose in the past 24 hours. They may rise for another day, hold steady on the second and fall on the third. The Teesta and Dudhkumar may flow above danger level at some points in the next 24 hours, and short-term flooding may persist or develop in places in low-lying areas along these rivers in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha.
Mymensingh division
The Someshwari and Bhulai rivers in Mymensingh division were steady over the past 24 hours but may rise for a day, hold steady on the second and fall on the third. The Kangsha may rise for two days and hold steady on the third. These rivers may flow above danger level at some points in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrokona in the next 24 hours, causing short-term flooding in places in low-lying riverside areas.
Major rivers
The FFWC said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rose over the past 24 hours and may keep rising for the next five days. The Ganges-Padma was steady over the past 24 hours and may stay steady for two days, then rise for the following three.
The Gumti, Muhuri, Selonia, Feni and Halda rivers in the eastern and south-eastern Chattogram division may also rise over the next three days, the centre said.
Meanwhile, because of heavy rain upstream and hill run-off, the Teesta at Dalia point in Nilphamari flowed 13 centimetres above danger level on Wednesday morning, and the Kushiyara at Fenchuganj in Sylhet flowed 6 centimetres above danger level.
