Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, minister for agriculture, fisheries and livestock, has said lists of farmers affected by floods in different parts of the country are being prepared at union and ward level. Once the lists are complete, the government will give the affected farmers the support they need.
He said this in reply to journalists' questions on the morning of 11 July after opening a tree fair organised by the district administration at the Cumilla Town Hall ground.
Seed, fertiliser and inputs
The minister said farmland, crops and farmers in various districts had suffered heavy losses in the recent floods. To establish the real extent of the damage, lists of affected farmers are being prepared at union and ward level through the local administration. Once the lists are finalised, farmers will be given seed, fertiliser, farm inputs and other support according to the type of loss, so that they can quickly return to farming.
He added that the government was always committed to keeping farmers producing and to ensuring the country's food security, and would take every necessary step to stand by farmers hit by natural disasters.
Tree plantation drive
On the tree plantation programme, the minister said that the habit of looting built up over a long time might not yet have left some people. But everyone should know that since the government announced the programme, the prime minister himself has been monitoring its progress regularly, so there is no room for irregularities.
He said there was no alternative to mass tree planting to tackle the adverse effects of climate change, protect the balance of the environment and build a green Bangladesh for future generations. He called on social, political and voluntary organisations and the general public to join the programme alongside the government.
Present were Cumilla City Corporation administrator Yusuf Molla Tipu, deputy commissioner Rozy Akter, Cumilla superintendent of police Anisuzzaman, and political and social figures and officials of the agriculture department at various levels.
