Continuous heavy to very heavy rain has already caused waterlogging in the capital, Dhaka, and various other parts of the country. The rain could cause floods in five more districts, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has said. The districts are Netrokona, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Sylhet and Moulvibazar.

The information was given in a release signed by the centre's assistant engineer, Mostafa Kamal Jihan, on the afternoon of 29 April.

According to the release, the Bhugai-Kangsha river at the Jariajanjail point, the Someshwari at the Kamalakanda point and the Magra at the Netrokona point in Netrokona, and the Manu river at the Moulvibazar point, are flowing above the pre-monsoon danger level.

In addition, the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj, in the north-eastern haor basin, may rise over the next three days. On the third day the Kushiyara may flow above the pre-monsoon danger level and the Surma at the warning level, which could cause floods in low-lying areas next to the haors in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.

The centre said the Manu, Khowai and Juri rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts may rise over the next three days. The Khowai and Juri may rise quickly within the next 24 hours and flow above the pre-monsoon danger level. The flood situation could then worsen in low-lying areas next to the haors in Moulvibazar district, and floods could develop in Habiganj district.

The Meteorological Department said the country's highest rainfall in the past 24 hours was 161 millimetres, at Nikli in Kishoreganj. Bhola recorded 151 millimetres and Feni 148 millimetres.
