Fazlur Rahman, a farmer in Darugram, Kusumbi union of Sherpur upazila, Bogura, now keeps about 3,000 ducks. They lay about 1,500 eggs a day, and egg sales bring him about Tk 300,000 a month, Krishi Shomoy's Bogura correspondent reports.
About 12 years ago Fazlur failed to buy a duck from a neighbour who would not sell, and out of that frustration decided to raise ducks himself. He now keeps ducks on one side of a 24-decimal village pond and farms fish on the other.
From morning to evening he feeds the flock paddy, snails and commercial feed himself. After the rice harvest he lets the ducks out onto the empty fields, which saves on feed; he employs one helper. He says each six-month cycle earns him Tk 1.5 million to Tk 1.8 million after costs.
Twelve years of experience have also taught him to treat ducks, and people from nearby areas now bring their birds to him. His family was once in want, he says, but duck farming has made him self-reliant.
Dr Md Niyaz Kazmir Rahman, livestock officer of Sherpur upazila, says the upazila has about 50 duck farmers, who receive regular treatment and advice so that none suffers losses from disease.
