Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has asked every DNCC councillor to plant a thousand trees in their own ward over the next three months. He made the call in his address as chair of the 22nd corporation meeting of the second council, held at midday on Tuesday (20 June) in the hall of Nagar Bhaban at Gulshan-2 in the capital.

The DNCC mayor said: "We have begun a programme to plant two lakh trees over the next two years. The DNCC's environment circle will plant and maintain trees on footpaths and road dividers. For other places, such as rooftop gardens, open spaces at homes, schools, colleges, mosques and madrasas, the city corporation will give every councillor a thousand saplings of various species. Over the next three months each of the 72 councillors will plant a thousand trees in their own ward."

Announcing that sacrificial waste would be removed within eight hours during the coming Eid-ul-Azha, Mayor Atiqul Islam said: "Last Eid-ul-Azha we cleared the sacrificial waste in 12 hours. This time I want to announce that, with everyone's effort, we in the north city will clear it within 8 hours. Our target is to remove the waste within eight hours and keep traffic moving. As last year, councillors, officials and staff must all work sincerely. I will be in the field myself."

After the discussion, the meeting gave a farewell on transfer to DNCC Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Md Zobaidur Rahman and welcomed the newly joined Chief Health Officer Brigadier General AKM Shafiqur Rahman.

The meeting, moderated by DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza, was attended by Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Md Zobaidur Rahman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Amirul Islam and Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore SM Sharif-ul Islam, among others.
