Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruq has said that wherever you look in Dhaka, you see only buildings upon buildings. To keep the earth liveable, there is no alternative to planting trees, he said.

He was speaking on Monday, 31 July, after inaugurating the tree-planting programme 2023 at the Basila Western Regional Police Lines, where he planted a krishnachura sapling.

The DMP commissioner said July is a month of severe drought, with Europe, America and the whole world burning in wildfires. The main cause is environmental disaster, namely the felling of trees and the drying up of canals, beels, rivers and waterways.

To save the earth, he said, rivers, canals and beels must be protected along with planting trees. Everyone should plant trees wherever there is a little space, not only at police lines. There is no alternative to trees to prevent disaster, not only in Bangladesh but in the whole world.

He launched the tree-planting programme 2023 in line with the prime minister's pledge, "Plant trees and care for them, build a country of healthy generations". The programme will be carried out in phases at every DMP police lines and office compound.

Additional Police Commissioner (Admin) AKM Hafiz Akter, Additional Police Commissioner (Logistics, Finance and Procurement) Md Ashrafuzzaman, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md Munibur Rahman, Additional Police Commissioner (CTTC) Md Asaduzzaman and other senior police officers each planted a fruit-tree sapling.
